Not a fan of the main character. Hope he gets enough development in this season to change my opinion.

Episode itself was alright, nothing amazing.

Also tentacle fluid rape.

His backstory was stupid, and as a kid, he was an unstable jittery annoying brat. All the 'villians' were assholes for no reason. Animation looks kewl. It's an alright first episode, but I don't see it getting any better. I did laugh when that kid was crying tho xD

I know a lot of people who laughed at that scene xD Including me. Felt sorry for him, but his facial expression...

Lmao, glad to know I'm not alone xD

Lol I applaud how some of you always manage to make pacing a issue one way or another.

I''m gonna love this, the MC is the type you wanna root for so ye all is good. Kaachan tho. Ok first of all, I thought he is the MC's mom intil they showed his face and I went wth. I bet he's gonna turn into tsundere good guy later, not interested. Now let's how good the female lead is, seems quirky and fun so ye I'm interested.

All I'll say is almost all the characters are actually very fleshed out, don't hate Kacchan too much (fave char bias right here)

(Also Katsuki Bakugou is his full name, Kacchan is the nickname Izuku gave him, like Deku is the nickname Katsuki gave Izuku)

This was one of the most hyped up series this season.... sad to say that I didnt like it that much, MC's too much of a coward.

Is there a problem with an MC having realistic character traits? God forbid the writer wanted to put in some semblance of realism into a character. I don't know if you are a literally god among men, but normal people would get pretty cowardly when having their entire world shattered and being bullied by literal superhumans.

Found it quite average tbh, but there's definitely potential. Blonde kid is douchebag certified, that's for sure.
5 main aspects I base my ratings on:
1. Did DramaEnthusiast make a thread about it?
2. Is it better than Breaking Bad?
3. Did MellowJello recommend the shit out of it?
4. Has it caused a (very entertaining) shitstorm on MAL?
5. Is it actually good?

Scratch the fifth point, it's not very relevant...

I see alot of people throwing around the word "generic" yet they don't describe what parts they consider generic to the point that the word essentially means nothing. In my opinion this first episode is not as generic as you guys make it out to be.

Setting wise: I can't think of any shonen animes that take place in a super hero universe. (unique by default until I find a shonen anime that takes place in a super hero setting)

Character wise: If you strip the MC deku down to his pure essence, he is the underdog character trope with confirmation that he has no shonen power capabilities and wants to be the strongest person ever. (I would say that deku is unique in the sense that deku is confirmed to have no super powers. Compared to stripped down first chapter Naruto, Naruto is confirmed to be super human from the get go with his initial backstory and in the end is shown to have the potential to be anything but a underdog. The MC deku doesn't even pull a Naruto moment in the episode seeing how all might had to swoop down to save him from being killed.)

Stripped down Bully Bakugo Katsuki: he is a pretty arrogant downer character who acts as a constant reminder that the MC is useless. (Immediate comparison wise he is pretty much Naruto's Kiba Inuzuka if he were a bigger more arrogant prick as soon as the Naruto series kicked off. Then again I can't remember when Kiba was a dick to Naruto until the flashbacks of the chunin exam battle so my memory could be off.) So I guess he is generic in that small sense but he plays a bigger role in the start in the first episode so at least he is a little more unique then Kiba Inuzuka.

Stripped down all might in the first episode: heh who am I kidding, you can't strip down all might as he is the literal super strong invincible character trope who is chaotic good and is a idol of what heroes should strive to be. I find him pretty comedic because all might doesn't really have a character of his own. That is pretty much it for characters that have important roles. (Minor roles there is none to go over: mom character is pretty much just a mom character for the plot. Teacher character is pretty much a teacher character for the plot though him being absent during the bullying incidents can be considered a legit criticism against the episode as well as the source material.)

Story wise: I feel that the first episode plays it safe by adapting most of the first chapter while not skipping any minor details. In order for it to be able to play the whole entire first chapter in anime form, the animation studio would probably require cutting out the plot dump of the "why" there are super heroes or abridge the MC's backstory but I feel that the first episode already has the right amount of action and character building. Maybe they can speed things up in a later episode so that the initial pacing of the first episode is a non issue or keep the pace so that they can continuously keep pumping out episodes in such a way that it doesn't resort to using filler episodes in order to prevent hitting the manga bump.

tl:dr Imo, the anime is perfectly fine and not really generic. 5/5

I hate that some people think that this is One-Punch Man rip-off in shounen settting.
When I read the first volume of the manga I fell in love with it. Unfortunately I never found time to read more since I had to study. I loved the animation (it is the perfect transition from the manga). The pacing was slower than I expected. I just hope that it won't take 7 episodes to adapt 7 chapters. Music was good compared to that atrocity that I saw in Gyakuten Saiban today. And lol for people saying it's too childish, in terms of childishness it is on the same level as every regular shonen. That art design is a good mixture of anime and cartoon. Kinda reminds me of Gurren Laggan and Soul Eater.

5/5 for today's episode.

That escalated too fast, we see a green monster go in on Midoriya.
"It only hurts for 45 seconds" "You'll fell better after that" ok.
Texas smash. Finding this quite similar to OPM.
How is he flying so much with just a jump, well Saitama went to space and jumped back to earth so whatever lel.
Well that pacing was slow, the episode was fine though.
I feel the art and animation can be better, it's not bad in any way so let's see what happens.
The audio is good

Did you see him swinging on that computer chair as a kid? LMAO.

And bowing at All Might like he's grating cheese. LOLOL.

Also, the music is perfect. Captures all the emotion dramatically and perfectly.

Since when does the pilot episode of an anime have feels right off the damn bat? I was conflicted at first with this series because I was thinking it was gonna be another dragged out, overhyped and generic shounen series but after reading the first chapter of the manga and watching this first episode...I was proven wrong. Despite the hero and supernatural element of this series, it seems like this one is gonna be one of those series that hits pretty close to home with a very relatable MC. I'm excited to see where this show goes and also to continue reading this series. 9/10.
Don't believe the hype.

from one series to another, the settings will usually be the one element that varies the most, so I'm pretty sure the comments about the generic nature of the show weren't referring to that.

No one is arguing that character A from series B is exactly the same as character X from BokuHero, here. It's just that this first episode pretty much feels like the start of your typical WSJ series: a teen character who's got a big dream and something special about him (whether it's something positive or negative) starting off as the underdog but who'll progressively work his way up the powerlevel ladder. May or may not be ostracized by his peers due to his difference, and has someone he looks up to as a mentor/model/father figure and tries to reach and/or emulate.
Takes its time to set up the world, the plot and the characters, but starts picking up steam once the battle system is fully introduced and the first important antagonists make their appearance.

Many battle shounen begin like that, and BokuHero is no exception to the rule. Doesn't mean it's bad, but I guess some people just want to see something they've never seen before, and inevitably end up disappointed when they don't. It all boils down to the viewers' expectations, really.

Well then, a cool first episode, still slightly annoyed by the episode count, just thirteen episodes :/
All Might's legit as could be 😎
I know this is American based and all but those english words coming from All Might sound weird af lol.
Btw All Might didn't answer Midoriya's question? I thought he did so in the manga....
Also, the perspective seems to be different from the manga. Well anyway, not too good of kickstarter episode, can't say I really like the VA's, I expected the character's voice too sound a bit, different. But they're not that bad either.
Well then Bones, don't disappoint me. I will be expecting the best! But if a 2nd season comes that'd better be two cours, and I'll probably rate this anime very poorly as I didn't like the beginning of the manga. Well a shame 😢

This was such a gread first episode.

As a manga reader I can say I'm satisfied with this. Animation was fine, OST amazing, the seiyuu killed it (in a very good way - I'm looking at you Okamoto) and I like that they are going with an easy pace and not rushing it. Although I am not sure we will reach
as long as we get a S2 later on, I am deal.

Also, I get why people find it generic as a first episode. BnHA is not any special shounen or a hidden gem. In fact it's your regular shounen as most out there. The reason why people hyped this a lot it's because people enjoy it very much (or that's what I understand from the manga discussions). It has it's cliche moments, but I think the execution is what makes me like this story so much.

This episode reminded me of what a jerk Kacchan used to be at first (not that he is not now as well but he is less than the first chapters). If I hadn't reread chapters of the manga this week I would have forgotten. But that's fine. It means Hori is doing a good work with him (because Kacchan makes Hori happy to draw him and likes him a lot overall). I really don't care for the hate he will get as I can't force people to like him but I believe his character development is pretty great.

Edit: I forgot to say that the only complain so far were the comic sounds during the classroom scene of Izuku and Katsuki. I think they added them to lighten up the mood, dunno. But it wasn't funny for me...This scene in the manga was very tense and you could feel Izuku's fear and Katsuki's bad intentions. Their problematic relationship is one of the core things of this story and it has to be represented like it should be.

Stupid Deku, stop studying the other heroes and start training.
100 Push-ups, 100 Sit-ups, 100 Squats and 10km running, every single day!

This should have been a 40 minutes special episode, splitting the first chapter in two was a bad idea.

The pacing was ok, ...maybe..., if they had gone faster it probably would have been confusing.

The animation and the quality of the art was mediocre, considering that this was the first episode.

The end of next episode or the start of the third will have a plot twist that will make many people drop this anime.

Was hyped going in and pretty much delivered. People are complaining about the pacing but it didn't bother me to much. Only got two fight scenes where animators could stretch their fingers but both of them looked solid. I'll watch episode two because I'm hungry for more but after that I'll save this til its over, to good to watch weekly.

I liked it! It's not my style, but it was nice to watch something different!
I loved the concept of the anime, where people has superpowers, but the protagonist doesn't and I felt so bad for him! I could feel his sadness and desire to be a superhero even if he doesn't have a Quirk. Okay he's coward, but I quite understand him, especially his fear for that explosion guy, his Quirk is very powerful.
I will watch the next episode to see if I will continue watching it. Overall it was very nice.

I'm kind of glad that this series isn't getting too much hype right off the gate. That way this show won't suffer the same fate as Boku Dake no Circlejerk and One Joke Man (which this show is likely to be better than, due to already having better characters and being adapted by a better studio). Instead, this show might end up with an actually intelligent fanbase.
Also, the op was great. Dug the fuck outta that shit.

I'm liking the colourful art used for the show. The animation's consistent and smooth too.

Deku will probably be a character that'll progress nicely as the show goes on. It sucks seeing him get bullied so easily by his whole classroom, especially the annoyingly arrogant Kacchan.

All Might is as much of a badass as I hoped that he'll be. Honestly, I wasn't expecting him to say "shit" out of nowhere though. XD

Whether or not this show will match the hype for it remains unclear, but I am hoping that it does.

I feel like I'm the only one who has a somewhat negative opinion on this show rn, but I'll say it anyways. I think this show is undeservingly overhyped but I haven't read the manga so who knows. I think the premise is interesting but hearing about how the pacing is going to be, this show might flop. The OP is another case of Noragami Aragoto, overpraised and pretty generic. I hope this show does well though. I honestly thought it was going to be the show that would combat JoJo as best anime of the season. Seeing how Academia currently stands, JoJo will blow Academia out of the water easily unless some crazy cool shit happens.
